Scientists Finally Solved The Albanian DNA Mystery — After 1,200 Years

For centuries, the origins of the Albanian people have remained one of Europe’s most debated historical mysteries. Albanians first appear clearly in surviving written records during the eleventh century, while the Albanian language forms its own distinctive branch of the Indo-European language family. A major 2026 study analyzed more than 6,000 ancient West Eurasian genomes alongside newly sequenced DNA from 74 present-day ethnic Albanians. The results revealed unusually strong continuity between modern Albanians and populations living in the western Balkans during the Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman period, and Early Middle Ages. Researchers found that by approximately 800–900 CE, a population living in early medieval Albania already possessed a genetic profile closely connected to many present-day Albanians. The study concluded that modern Albanians predominantly descend from a surviving palaeo-Balkan population, alongside geographically varied East European-related ancestry averaging roughly 10–20%. The evidence supports deep population continuity in the western Balkans, but it does not prove that every modern Albanian descends exclusively from one named ancient tribe.
