Extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) in Red Cell Disorders

Thank you to our speaker, Dr, Hayley Merkeley and to our sponsor, Sanofi, for their support of this educational activity. Dr. Merkeley is originally from southeastern British Columbia. She completed medical school, internal medicine, and hematology training at UBC, followed by a fellowship in red cell disorders at the University of Toronto. Her academic and research interests include sickle cell disease, thalassemia, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and porphyrias. She is also actively involved in medical education at UBC and global health initiatives. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the populations affected by extramedullary hematopoiesis in hemoglobinopathies and characterize the overall clinical burden. 2. Explain the underlying pathophysiology and key mechanisms driving extramedullary hematopoiesis. 3. Outline an evidence-based approach to screening and diagnostic evaluation. 4. Review current treatment strategies and management considerations across clinical scenarios.
