Regarding the etymology of the name "Kumano," the Kojiki-den attributes "Kuma" to "Komori" (hiding/cage), while the Koshi Tsū Wakumon suggests it's a corruption of "Kamino" (divine field). In other words, Kumano is a sacred place where gods hide and seclude themselves. Putting another word, it's a place with an ancient underworld belief system. So, who exactly are these gods who hide and seclude themselves in Kumano? Furthermore, at the heart of Kumano faith are the gods of the three Kumano shrines: Kumano Hongū Taisha (Main deity: Ketsumimiko-no-Ōkami) Kumano Hayatama Taisha (Main deity: Kumano Hayatama-no-Ōkami) Kumano Nachi Taisha (Main deity: Kumano Musumi-no-Ōkami) --These are the gods of the three Kumano shrines.
