Why Did Anna Kepner’s Judge Change His Mind?!

Four months ago, Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres let Timothy Hudson walk out of a federal courthouse and go home to his uncle’s house. He called the case “a much closer call.” Then on June 10th, the same judge ordered Hudson detained and used language federal judges spend their careers avoiding. He said Hudson could “snap at any time” and that no monitor, no curfew, and no custody arrangement can keep anyone safe from him. Same judge. Same defendant. Something changed. And now Hudson’s own step-grandmother has gone on camera and said what millions of people following this case have been thinking: the parents should be charged. She called the decision to put three teenagers who weren’t raised together in a single stateroom a “recipe for disaster.” She blamed the adults for alleged alcohol access and missing medication. Anna’s ex-boyfriend says she was scared of her stepbrother and slept at friends’ houses to avoid him. The Crumbley precedent proved parents can be held criminally responsible. But the Carnival Horizon flies a Panamanian flag. No federal contributing-to-delinquency statute exists in this context.
