Heike Braun is a coffin maker. In her carpenter's workshop in Spaichingen near Rottweil, she creates the coffins she designs herself. A coffin is the last protective shell that surrounds a person. Built in the knowledge that the work will only be visible for a short time at all. Nevertheless, Heike Braun and her carpenters work with love and care on the 'last house' as they say. They saw, plane, drill and sand coffins from oak, pine and poplar wood. The wood for the coffins is cut in local forests or delivered from Alsace. It takes many steps to turn the raw boards into highly polished and lacquered coffin boxes. Everyone must have patience, a sharp eye and also strength. The coffins are made by hand, assisted by special machines developed just for coffin making, some of which have been in use for many years. As the only woman in a truly male industry, Heike Braun first had to gain respect. But after all, she grew up in a coffin carpentry shop and is familiar with every step of the work. She can even lend a hand. Heike Braun took over the carpentry shop from her parents. A real family business for more than 130 years. Building a coffin with the same dedication and conscientiousness as for a valuable piece of furniture is true craftsmanship.
