During the Bakumatsu Period (1853-1869), the 8th Headmaster Iba Gunbee Hidenari lead the school to great prosperity: it was then considered one of the “Four Great Dojo of Edo (Tokyo)”, on par with Hokushin Ittō Ryū, Shintō Munen Ryū and Kyōshin Meichi Ryū. Yamazaki Setsuryūken, a retainer of Kameyama Domain in the Ise Province (Mie Prefecture) who was an assistant instructor at the Iba Dojo, received from Hidenari the Menkyo Kaiden (license of full mastery). The first year of Genji (1864), Yamazaki returned to his village in Kameyama and built there the Kameyama Enbujō training hall. He started to instruct the retainers of the domain and the Shingyōtō Ryū commenced to develop in the area. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), the Shingyōtō Ryū went on declining or disappeared from the different places it had previously spreaded in. However, the tradition remained strong in Kameyama and was handed down there to this day. The Kameyama branch of the school celebrated in 2015 its 150th birthday. In 1975, the Shingyōtō Ryū became the first Intangible Cultural Asset recognised by the Mie Prefecture government. -- CREDITS -- Footage by Seido Co., Ltd. https://www.seidoshop.com (en) https://www.seidoshop.jp (jp) https://www.seidoshop.com/blogs/the-s...
