Phosphate fertilizers are essential to modern agriculture, particularly for potato crops, the French's favorite vegetable. In Morocco, the country with the largest phosphate reserves, residents complain about the impacts of fertilizer production on their environment and health. But they lack scientific data. Despite the pressure, a team of journalists, in collaboration with scientists from a French public hospital, sets out to find evidence of contamination in Morocco and also in France. With nearly 150 samples, they conducted a groundbreaking study on a hidden poison in these fertilizers that contaminates potatoes. This poison is cadmium, a carcinogenic heavy metal. It ends up on our food and ultimately in our bodies. Their findings made headlines and led to changes in the law.
