After a Night Shift, I Found Peace on a Highland Trail 🌿

After a night shift, my body was quietly asking for the mountains. I drove through thick fog up to the roadside station on the Utsukushigahara Highlands. At 2,000 meters, the night was still cold — perfect for sleeping in the car. Around 4 a.m., I woke to the cry of a deer. I rolled down the window and saw a thin line of pale orange along the eastern sky. I got ready, and waited outside — just in time to watch a round, dazzling orange sun rise. I couldn't look away. I set off before 6. A short walk along the boardwalk, and suddenly a 360° view opened up — from the Yatsugatake range all the way to the Alps. I felt nothing but gratitude. Walking the grasslands toward Ougatou, past cattle and ponies grazing freely, I kept thinking, "Is this really Japan?" From Ougatou I walked 900 meters on to Ougahana, where the town and the Alps spread out below, and a cool wind soaked into my sun-warmed body. Then the long trail — a narrow path through a sea of bamboo grass. I boiled water at the edge of a ridge and drank coffee with the mountains all around me. My heart quietly loosened. I met a couple taking wedding photos on a distant ridge. "What a perfect day for it," I said, and "Be happy." Some of their happiness rubbed off on me. I came here wanting to be alone with nature — but I found myself taking photos for others, saying hello. When the wavelength matches, that feeling just grows. Mountains and nature are irreplaceable to me. I want to keep making these quiet journeys.
