Court of Appeal rules Trudeau broke law when he used Emergencies Act on Freedom Convoy
The Federal Court of Appeal has ruled that the Trudeau government unlawfully invoked the Emergencies Act and that the regulations under it were unconstitutional. The Emergencies Act was invoked in response to the 2022 Freedom Convoy which had protests that blocked streets in Ottawa and blocked borders in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba. The Canadian Constitution Foundation challenged the invocation of the Emergencies Act as illegal and unconstitutional. And the Federal court sided with the CCF in a massive victory, and that finding has now been upheld by the Federal Court of Appeal. In this episode of Canadian Justice, host Christine Van Geyn interviews Sujit Choudhry, who represented the CCF in Federal Court, and Josh Dehaas, the CCF’s new Litigation Director.
