Magic and Superstitions in Today's Iran: Why Do We Still Believe? | From Ancient Iran to Instagram Belief in magic, spells, and superstitions is more prevalent in Iranian life today than we think! In this episode, we address a fundamental question: How is it that modern people, in the age of the Internet and communications, still believe in magic, and where did we go wrong throughout history? We begin with primitive man, who sought refuge in hidden forces to overcome fear and lack of control. Then we move on to ancient Iran; from the definition of magic in Zoroastrianism and the belief in astrology and the auspicious and inauspicious days (such as Bahman and Spandarmes) to the position of the Great Sleeper in the court of kings such as Naser al-Din Shah. We also talk about the magic of knots: from tying cloth to the trees of the Murad and the shrines of Imamzades to the expression "untying the knot from the problem" in Hafez's poem and the custom of tying the Sabzeh in Sizdeh Badr.
