Unlike most of Manhattan, it wasn't built on natural land. Instead, it was constructed on approximately 92 acres of landfill created using material excavated during the construction of the original World Trade Center in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today the neighborhood is known for its quiet streets, luxury residential buildings, beautiful parks, and nearly 1.2 miles (about 2 km) of waterfront esplanade along the Hudson River. Battery Park City was designed as a model for modern urban planning, combining residential buildings, office space, public art, green areas, playgrounds, and bicycle paths into one carefully planned community. Along the waterfront, visitors enjoy spectacular views of the Hudson River, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the skyline of Jersey City across the river. One of the neighborhood's most photographed landmarks is Irish Hunger Memorial, a unique landscape monument commemorating the Great Irish Famine. Built with stones and soil imported from Ireland, it recreates the feeling of walking through a rural Irish hillside in the middle of Manhattan.
