Defeat the generic clowns on your way to Guan Yu who will nearly always be at the last gate by the time you reach him. Also, you cannot under any condition reach Guan Yu before he reaches any of the generic officers because otherwise the gates will no longer open and he will follow you around the stage, meaning you cannot progress.
