Karl Brady - Logboat Discoveries in Lough Corrib

Karl Brady is a senior Archaeologist with the Underwater Archaeology Unit of the Department responsible for Heritage. He and his colleagues have done pioneering work for many years on a great number of underwater archaeological discoveries throughout the entire country. Following a hydrographic survey of Lough Corrib several vessels were discovered on the lake bed. These included many logboats from an amazing time span of 2,500 B.C. to the eleventh century. These were examined by Karl and his team. Various artefacts were discovered in some of the boats, including a stunning array of weapons such as Viking axes and Iron and Bronze Age spearheads. New knowledge was added to constructional methods. Karl gives a fascinating account of this project. Karl and the Unit have also recovered artefacts including cannon from some Spanish Armada wrecks on the Irish Coast.
