The second serious attempt at a quality VHS release of classic black and white Betty Boop shorts by the owners of the original 35mm film elements. This is the first tape in an 8 tape collection titled The Betty Boop Definitive Collection. This massive and ambitious set from Republic Pictures Home Video compiled most of the surviving Boop cartoons in quality transfers that are still damn great by modern standards. It's one of the few times in the VHS era that a serious attempt was made at anthologizing almost every major cartoon of a famous series in a single multi-tape set. Volume 1 is dubbed The Birth of Betty Boop, featuring 8 cartoons that demonstrate the evolution of Betty from a half human/half canine hybrid to the fully human bombshell we all know and love today. 1. Richard Fleischer Introduction- this is actually a near 10 minute featurette in which film director Fleischer (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) discusses the hard work his father Max and uncle Dave put into creating this animated icon. He also discusses some of the technological advances the duo made. You'll be in for a shock if you're one of those who believes Disney was solely responsible for the technical innovations he took credit for. Fleischer also goes into some detail about the 8 tape set itself. 4. Start of Main program
