20 Emperors in 50 Years — How Did Rome Survive That?

Between 235 and 284 CE, more than 20 men claimed the Roman throne, and almost none kept it for long. The Crisis of the Third Century and Rome's Near Disintegration follows the fifty years when civil war, invasion, plague, and economic collapse nearly broke the empire apart for good. This episode traces the disaster in order, from the Severan dynasty and the first cracks in imperial stability to the barracks emperors, the debasement of Roman currency, the Plague of Cyprian, Gothic raids, and the humiliation of Valerian's capture by Shapur I. As the center weakens, whole regions peel away into the Gallic Empire in the west and Palmyra under Zenobia in the east. Then the story turns. Gallienus begins the hard repair work, Aurelian reunites the empire by force, and Diocletian rebuilds Rome on a new foundation through the Tetrarchy, military reform, tax overhaul, and a far more centralized state.
