This video is the second in a series where I show you how to correctly count rhythms and put them into practice. With the exercises in these videos, you can greatly improve your sense of rhythm and learn to read rhythms more fluently. In the first video, we covered reading and counting whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and their rest values in detail. In this episode, we'll take a closer look at the eighth note. Since eighth notes halve the beat of a quarter note, the first eighth note of each pair of notes sounds on the "heavy" beat. Because eighth notes are half the length of quarter notes, there's now room for another eighth note between each of these "heavy" beats. These eighth notes fall on the so-called "off-beats," also known as "and" beats. A 4/4 measure filled with eighth notes would therefore be counted like this: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. The "and" is usually represented in writing with a plus sign, but it's still read and counted as "and." With "Music Insight," you have the ultimate guide to successfully understanding music theory.
