Las favoritas de Albert Serra (Ciclo de cine)

Albert Serra, both in his favorite films and in his own cinema, rejects political correctness and the pursuit of success, as, for him, these are the two enemies of true auteur cinema. Since last year, the Contemporary Cinema program has been curated by relevant and inspiring figures from national and international cinema. Following the premise of La Casa Encendida's program, where we show films that haven't had a wide distribution in commercial theaters, Carla Simón, Mati Diop, and Elena López Riera have chosen their favorite films of the last two or three years. In May, it's Albert Serra's turn, who has selected The Last Summer by Catherine Breillat; Fairytale by Alexander Sokurov; The Human Body of the Fabric by Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor; The Palace by Roman Polanski; and Essential Truths of the Lake by Lav Díaz. “For twenty years now, with the exception of the annual Cannes film festival, mostly those in competition, I only watch contemporary films that challenge me and that I would have liked to have made; I know this before seeing them by intuition and by recommendation. And they never disappoint me. But they always sadden me… They are so original that, despite my desire and my resources, they could only have been made by their own authors and no one else, not even remotely, they could not even have been imagined or dreamed by another person. They cannot be made with money. Or with studies. They are not usually successful and their meaning is for later, for later; when you see them, they have none. But you recognize without a doubt that they are unique, and for this very reason, very diverse. You cannot have the same experience outside of them, that is why they are so real and imprint themselves on your own life and truly influence it. They are futuristic and ironic, they do not take themselves seriously (they leave that to us, the spectators…) because in order to exist like that, in their final form, they have to… "Be indifferent to everything and everyone." Albert Serra. Albert Serra (Banyoles, 1975) studied Hispanic Philology and Comparative Literature at the University of Barcelona. As a film director, he is considered one of the most outstanding international contemporaries. He made his international debut with Honor of Cavalleria, a loose adaptation of Don Quixote that premiered at the Directors' Fortnight at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and was considered one of the best films of the year by Cahiers du Cinéma. In 2009, he premiered in Cannes with El cant dels ocells, which was selected and awarded at several international festivals. In 2013, he wrote and directed the film Història de la meva mort, which won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. In 2016, he presented The Death of Louis XIV, which received the Jean Vigo Prize and seven nominations for the Gaudí Awards. In 2019, he returned to the Cannes Film Festival with Liberté, a film about libertines expelled from the Puritan court of Louis XVI, for which he won the Special Jury Prize. In 2022, he directed Pacification, a hypnotic thriller shot in French Polynesia, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or. It was also chosen as Best Film of the Year by Cahiers du Cinéma, won the Louis Delluc Prize, and received nine César Award nominations. In the museum world, on the occasion of the exhibition Are You Ready for Television? held at MACBA in 2010, he presented his fourteen-episode series Els noms de Crist, filmed in the museum's own galleries and based on the work De los nombres de Cristo (The Names of Christ) by Fra Luis de León (1586). A year later, he directed El Senyor ha fet en mi meravelles (The Lord Has Fet in My Meravelles) for the exhibition Todas las cartas (All the Letters). Film Correspondences from the CCCB in Barcelona.
