İzmir- Çift taraflı yapay kalp cihazıyla hayata döndü
Mustafa Çimen (36), a chronic heart patient living in the Karabağlar district of İzmir, clung to life after undergoing artificial heart surgery at İzmir Katip Çelebi University (İKÇÜ) İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital. Çimen, who will continue his life with two supporting devices implanted on both the right and left sides of his heart, said, "The surgery has given me some relief. Living with these artificial heart device bags will be a little difficult, but I'm still grateful for what I have." Mustafa Çimen, a cleaning staff member at Ege University, married father of two, and suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, a congenital muscle weakness, was diagnosed with heart failure in 2016 after experiencing complaints of fatigue and weakness. Çimen, who has had to undergo frequent hospital stays, especially over the past year, received bilateral artificial heart devices implanted on both the right and left sides 36 days ago at İKÇÜ İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital. Mustafa Çimen, who stated that he will continue his life with two bags containing the support device until the organ transplant is performed, said he misses his son, Hasan Çimen (8), and his daughter, Sümeyye Çimen (12), very much. "WHOEVER CAN DONATED AN ORGAN" Çimen said, "I have Muscular Dystrophy. As the disease progressed, I was diagnosed with heart failure in 2016. I began experiencing swelling in my feet and body. The swelling in my feet meant I couldn't walk. I was also experiencing weakness. I was hospitalized every 15 days and discharged after treatment. The surgery provided some relief. Living with these artificial heart device bags will be a bit difficult, but I'm still grateful for what I have. Anyone who can afford it should donate an organ. If donations increase, patients like me won't have to wait. I miss my home and my children." "HE COULDN'T GET OUT OF BED, BUT NOW HE CAN WALK" Prof. Dr. Ali Gürbüz of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital, who performed the surgery with his team, emphasized the inadequacy of medical treatment for Mustafa Çimen, who had been staying at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine and other hospitals for a long time. He said, "We couldn't even discharge him from the hospital. We wanted to include him in the heart transplant program. However, because there weren't enough donations, we had to resort to mechanical support systems. Because both the right and left ventricles were contracting poorly, we implanted two support devices. His vital functions have returned to normal. He couldn't get out of bed, but now he can get up and walk. This is how we will discharge our patient. He will wait for an organ donation." Prof. Dr. Gürbüz explained that they implanted two pumping devices, called mechanical support systems, which function as the heart, and that this system is commonly known as an artificial heart. "UNFORTUNATE DONATIONS ARE NOT ENOUGH" Dr. Gürbüz stated that heart transplantation is a longer-term treatment option, saying, "The heart currently has no function. The patient will be able to continue living thanks to these supports. This system is usually implanted unilaterally, supporting the left side of the heart. However, in this patient, we implanted bilaterally because both right and left heart functions were impaired. This is a technically more difficult and less commonly used method. We also implant these devices permanently in patients who cannot undergo a heart transplant. Patients can live for many years with this device. However, a heart transplant is ideal. That way, patients have a longer lifespan. In this patient, we used bilateral mechanical support because both sides were not contracting adequately. Our primary goal is heart transplantation. Unfortunately, there are not enough donors. Donations have dropped significantly, especially since the pandemic. While around 80-90 heart transplants were performed annually before COVID-19, this number has now dropped to 30-40. Our goal is to increase heart donations and transplant waiting patients as soon as possible." (DHA) For the full news: https://songelisme.com/izmir-cift-tar...
