Army Commander General Joseph Aoun inspected the military units deployed in Beirut and Mount Lebanon this morning, which are carrying out security operations amidst the popular protests across Lebanon. He addressed the soldiers, saying: "You have upheld your oath and proven to all that the military institution is an umbrella for all the sons of the nation, regardless of their affiliations or viewpoints. You have protected the rights of all citizens." He explained that the army, like all armies, receives its training to confront enemies and dangers, while the Lebanese army is currently carrying out its mission of maintaining internal security for its people. He noted that it is responsible for the safety of the protesters and all other citizens, reiterating that blocking roads is unacceptable and that freedom of movement is enshrined in international conventions. The Army Commander confirmed that the recent arrests included individuals who instigated riots, confronted the army, attempted to obstruct its mission, and attacked its personnel. The arrests also included non-Lebanese individuals and others found in possession of narcotics. General Aoun expressed his deep sorrow over the martyrdom of young Alaa Abu Fakhr, emphasizing that the case is now in the hands of the judiciary. He noted that this was the only incident to occur during the month of popular protests, pointing out that the situation is different in several other countries experiencing similar events, where a large number of victims have fallen—something we are working to avoid. The Army Commander called for avoiding rumors aimed at misleading public opinion and creating a rift between citizens and the military institution, affirming that history will bear witness that the Lebanese Army saved Lebanon. He concluded by urging everyone to remain vigilant and maintain the highest level of awareness in the face of the challenges facing our country.
