Katmai Bearcap: It's oFISHal - The Fish are Arriving at Brooks Falls!
The buffet is officially OPEN!🐟 In this video, you'll see some of the first real "pulses" of salmon entering the river. Watch as the water comes alive with a full-on fish boil and hungry brown bears quickly realize that dinner has been served. We also see salmon launching themselves into the air in spectacular "popcorning" displays over the falls. And of course, no Brooks Falls spectacle would be complete without the ever-opportunistic gulls. Whether they're patiently waiting for leftovers or boldly swooping in to steal a bite, "Alice" is always ready to join the party. The Fish of Brooks River While Brooks River is home to several fish species, the true stars of summer are the sockeye salmon. Every year, millions of sockeye return from the ocean to the freshwater streams where they were born. Their incredible migration fuels nearly every part of Katmai's ecosystem. Brown bears depend on the salmon to build the fat reserves they'll need to survive winter hibernation, while bald eagles, gulls, foxes, wolves, and countless other animals also benefit from this annual bounty. Even the surrounding forests receive nutrients as bears carry salmon into the woods, enriching the soil for future generations of plants. That's why sockeye salmon are considered a keystone species. Their annual return supports an entire web of life, making one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles possible. Stay tuned for a special appearance bonus clip, beginning at TS 18:43 - a stunning Bald Eagle! The Explore viewing experience keeps expanding and branching out.
