Subscribe now https://7news.link/MyBigStory Julian Assange is, without doubt, one of the most famous prisoners on the planet. For the past 10 years, he has been, arbitrarily or otherwise, locked up, after his website Wikileaks published troves of classified information provided by U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning. In June 2012, he was granted asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. He remained there for 7 years until April 2019, when British Police raided the embassy. Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks for breaching his bail conditions, and sent to Belmarsh Prison - the highest security jail of its kind. He’s remained there ever since, and in December 2021, the UK High Court in London ruled that Assange could be extradited to the US to face the charges. And on 1 July 2022, it was announced that Assange had formally appealed against the extradition order The US government maintains that he committed crimes of Espionage - which could see him handed a maximum 170-year jail sentence. Assange and his supporters insist he has done nothing wrong, outside of shining a spotlight on the truth. And two of the people closest to him, his father John and brother Gabriel, have spent a decade working tirelessly campaigning to set Julian free. We spoke to them from Parliament House in Australia’s capital, Canberra, where they were preparing to meet political heavyweights.
