Walking Through Rural Romania – Villages, Costs & the Via Transilvanica

In this second video in my Romania series, I leave the big cities behind and explore the small villages that make rural Romania so special. One of the best ways to see them is by walking part of the Via Transilvanica, a 1,400 km trail that crosses the country through forests, farmland, and historic villages. The trail is surprisingly accessible, with regular towns, guesthouses, food stops, and train connections that make it possible for many travelers — even beginner hikers — to walk a section of it. In this guide, I share the section of the trail I hiked, how I got there using public transportation, and what the trail is actually like day to day. I also talk about the amenities along the route, the villages that are especially worth visiting, and some of the highlights and challenges you might encounter. If you're a retired traveler, slow traveler, or someone curious about trying a long-distance hike for the first time, the Via Transilvanica is a surprisingly approachable adventure.
