Orchestra leader Sterling Young grew up on Catalina Island off the coast of southern California. He studied violin as a child and at age 19 joined Ted Dahl's outfit. In 1935 Sterling formed his own sweet orchestra. The new group quickly became popular, especially with the Hollywood celebrity crowd.
