Primarily used in the Western world as a therapeutic tool for stress reduction, in their Nepalese homeland they remain much more than that: Singing bowls are instruments for meditation, tantric ceremonies, and healing rituals. Many of these bowls are handcrafted in small family workshops. Each family has its own little secrets and makes bowls for a specific purpose. Sound bowl therapists like Santa Ratna Shakya and his daughter Suvechhya base their treatment on the teachings of the seven chakras. These are energy centers in the body. In traditional sound bowl therapy, seven different bowls are used: seven tones for the seven chakras. One of their patients is 21-year-old Sangita. She is eight months pregnant with her first child.
