Rail Trail, from Castlegar to the Paulson Overpass

Join us as we ride the Western Columbia Rail Trail from Castlegar to the Paulson Overpass. This scenic route follows part of the old Columbia and Western Railway line and offers incredible views over Arrow Lakes. Along the way, we cross trestles, pass through tunnels, and stop to take in the scenery before reaching the impressive Paulson Overpass from below. Stay to the end as we make one more stop at Hugh Keenleyside Dam near Castlegar. The dam was built as part of the Columbia River Treaty and created the Arrow Lakes Reservoir, which stretches approximately 230 kilometres north toward Revelstoke. We also check out the navigation lock, which allows boats to travel between the Columbia River and Arrow Lakes Reservoir as the water levels change. It is free for recreational boats to use, although commercial traffic, logs, and other priority operations may go first. This adventure has a bit of everything: beautiful views, railway history, trestles, tunnels, motorcycles, and one of the most interesting pieces of engineering in the Kootenays.
