The story follows John Hector McFarlane, a young lawyer who is accused of murdering his client, Jonas Oldacre, a wealthy builder. McFarlane had recently been named the sole beneficiary in Oldacre’s will, making him the prime suspect when Oldacre seemingly disappears and evidence of foul play emerges. Inspector Lestrade is quick to arrest McFarlane, but Holmes suspects there is more to the case than meets the eye. Through his keen observation and deductive reasoning, Holmes uncovers a clever deception and proves McFarlane’s innocence.
