Gene Kardos & His Orch. - The Continental, 1934

Gene Kardos & His Orchestra – The Continental (You Kiss While You’re Dancing) fox-trot from „Gay Divorcee” (Magidson-Conrad), Vocalion 1934 (USA) NOTE: Gene (Eugene) KARDOS (born 1899 in Yorkville, NY – died 1980) was an American dance bandleader of Hungarian descent. His orchestra's heyday was in the 1930s, when Gene Kardos recorded for Victor (1931-32) as well as for numerous other labels, including Perfect, Malotone, Bluebird, Vocalion, Banner, and several others. Kardos learned to play violin and saxophone at an early age and worked in vaudeville orchestras until forming his first band in 1930. This band, based in New York City, was performing in the Gloria Palast, a German-American ballroom and café on East 86th Street in Yorkville. His musicians included Hymie Schertzer (saxophone), Vic Schoen (trumpet, arranger), Joel Shaw (piano), and Bernie Green (arranger-composer). Dick Robertson and Bea Wain were vocalists on many of his recordings. Kardos's orchestra played in the style of a hotel dance orchestra and it disbanded in 1939. Kardos took a job at the New York postal service and also led a small, café-style band that performed evenings at Zimmerman's Hungaria, a popular Yorkville restaurant until the 1950s.
