The Star-Spangled Banner — All 5 Verses (The Ones America Forgot) | U.S. National Anthem
Six presidents. Two wars. Forty-seven years apart. The song most Americans know by heart is only the first eight lines of a much longer story. Francis Scott Key wrote four verses on the morning of September 14, 1814, watching the American flag still fly over Fort McHenry after twenty-five hours of British bombardment. Half a century later, as the Union began to tear itself apart, a Boston poet named Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. picked up his pen and added a fifth. This is the complete Star-Spangled Banner. All five verses. Not in the order history wrote them — in the order the story asks to be heard. ▶️ Epic Military & Patriotic Collection: • National Anthems — Epic Rock Versions ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📖 THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG Francis Scott Key was a 35-year-old lawyer aboard a British ship in Baltimore Harbor, negotiating the release of a prisoner, when the bombardment of Fort McHenry began. For twenty-five hours he watched. At dawn on September 14, 1814, when the smoke cleared, the American flag was still there. He wrote the poem that morning. The tune he chose was "To Anacreon in Heaven" — a British gentleman's club drinking song. It would take 117 years for Congress to make it the national anthem, in 1931. Verse three has long been the most difficult. Its reference to "the hireling and slave" is a bitter line aimed at the British forces — including formerly enslaved men who had joined them under the promise of freedom. It is the reason most performances stop at verse one. We include it here not to celebrate it, but because history should not be edited quietly. Verse five was never official. In 1861, as the Civil War began, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. — physician, poet, father of the future Supreme Court Justice — wrote an additional stanza. He imagined a nation "by the millions unchained." Emancipation was still two years away. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🇺🇸 THE AMERICAN JOURNEY From the ramparts of Baltimore in 1814 to the battlefields of the Civil War in 1861, this anthem carries the full weight of a country still becoming itself. The flag Key saw was thirty by forty-two feet — sewn by eleven women over six weeks. The verses that followed were written by two men separated by half a century, but bound by the same belief: that this country, whatever it becomes, is worth remembering completely. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📊 BY THE NUMBERS • 4 verses written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 • 1 additional verse written by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. in 1861 • 117 years between composition and official adoption (1931) • 25 hours of bombardment at Fort McHenry • 30 by 42 feet — the flag that still flew at dawn • 47 years between the first and fifth verses ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚖️ DISCLAIMER This video is a historical and musical presentation. It is not a political statement. Verse three is included as a matter of historical record — the lyrics were written in 1814 and reflect that era. Verse five is presented as it was written in 1861 by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. and is not part of the official U.S. national anthem. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🤖 AI DISCLOSURE This Aura Vault production may use AI-assisted tools for vocals, instruments, visuals, arrangement support, restoration, or production workflow — always under human creative direction, editing, and final curation. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎧 MORE FROM AURA VAULT ⚔️ The Ballad of the Green Berets — Epic Military Rock: • The Ballad of the Green Berets — Billboard... ⚔️ Battle Hymn of the Republic — Epic Version: • The Union Song That 700,000 Soldiers Sang ... 🎖 The Sacred War — Epic Rock: • ⚔️ The Sacred War (Священная Война) — Epic... 🎵 Katyusha — Epic Rock: • Katyusha (Катюша) — Most Powerful Epic Ver... 🇩🇪 Lili Marleen — The German Love Song That Crossed Every Front Line: • Lili Marleen — The German Love Song That C... 🇷🇺 Farewell of Slavianka: • Прощание славянки (Farewell of Slavianka) ... 🌍 Epic National Anthems & Historic Songs: • National Anthems — Epic Rock Versions If this channel is worth your time, consider subscribing.
