The key points are breathing and the spine. If you practice the "spine breathing" I'm about to explain, those swirling thoughts will stop instantly. It's surprisingly easy, so please try it with me. ◆Thoughts continue to move towards "sometime other than now" and "somewhere other than here" As a fundamental principle, the "head" is constantly thinking about "sometime other than now," "somewhere other than here," and "someone other than myself." That's the function of the brain and the nature of thought. In contrast, the "body" below the neck always remains focused on "me here and now." Rather than "thinking" about myself in the "here and now," the state of simply "feeling" what I am in the "here and now" is constantly occurring from the neck down. When you bring your awareness downwards (towards your body/gut), your mind becomes encompassed by the intelligence of your body, allowing you to verbalize what you feel and translate it into future actions—the "correct use of your mind." However, if you direct too much energy to your mind, you lose your ability to settle into the present moment, and various problems begin to arise one after another. ◆The brain is a "receiver (antenna)" The brain is often thought of as an organ for creating something new, but that's not actually the case. As clearly stated in books by Tufti and Transurfing, the brain is fundamentally a "receiver (antenna)" itself. Generating new ideas is more of a role for the "body (gut)." The brain plays a role in capturing future visions and inspirations from variant space and transmitting them to the nerves that permeate the entire body. However, overworking the brain with endless, repetitive thinking can reduce its sensitivity, making it unable to capture clear visions—much like how snow clinging to a TV antenna distorts the screen. To avoid this, it's essential to settle down in your "gut" and gently receive the pure sensations of your "body" present in the moment. "Spine breathing" is extremely helpful for this. ◆ How to do "spine breathing" Any posture is fine, but sitting is the easiest. ① Focus on your pelvis First, become aware that you have a pelvis. Then, using your ischial tuberosities (the pointed bones in your buttocks), find a position where your "pelvis alone can stand on its own," and surrender your entire body to that position. There's no need to force yourself into a good posture with your muscles. ② Stacking the vertebrae one by one Once the pelvic position is determined, stack the vertebrae of the spine one by one on top of it, and create the most natural form for the spine. Then, gently place the skull on top. ③ Exhale through the nose and lower your awareness From here, breathe slowly through your nose. The important thing is the "exhale." Imagine that the "starting point of the spine" is located just behind your nose (the point where the skull and spine meet). As you exhale through your nose with a "whoosh," imagine your "center of awareness" slowly descending down your spine with a "whoosh." ④ Inhale when you feel the urge Once your awareness has lowered to where you can inhale in one breath (for example, your throat or solar plexus), inhale with a "whoosh." When inhaling, keep your awareness focused there (for example, your throat or solar plexus). Once you exhale, the air will flow in naturally, so you don't need to consciously think about your inhalation. ⑤ Lowering your awareness to the tip of your tailbone As you exhale again, lower your awareness further down.
