JAKARTA, KOMPASTV – The rupiah exchange rate is again under pressure, breaking through the psychological level of Rp18,000 per US dollar. Economic, currency, and commodity observer Ibrahim Assuaibi said the pressure on the rupiah is starting to be evident in several domestic economic indicators. One of these is Indonesia's trade balance, which recorded a deficit in May 2026. "The trade balance in May experienced a deficit of US$1.61 billion. This indicates a significant need for crude oil imports, resulting in a deficit," said Ibrahim. According to Bank Indonesia's Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) data, the rupiah reached Rp17,999 per US dollar at the start of the week, then weakened again to close at around Rp18,090 per US dollar. Meanwhile, at several banks, the US dollar selling rate has even reached the range of Rp18,100 to Rp18,220 per US dollar. Ibrahim believes the pressure on the rupiah has the potential to continue if various negative sentiments, both domestic and international, continue to subside.
