Why are deadly heatwaves gripping European summers?

More than 1,300 deaths have been linked to the extreme heat sweeping across Europe. Temperatures soared above 40°C in parts of France, Spain, Italy and Germany. Meteorologists say a powerful ‘heat dome’ is trapping hot air over Europe, creating dangerous and prolonged heat. Authorities have issued red alerts, urging people to stay indoors, avoid peak temperatures and remain hydrated. The extreme temperatures are also exposing weaknesses in transport networks, healthcare systems and other critical infrastructure. The World Health Organization warns rising temperatures are a ‘silent killer’ responsible for an estimated half-million deaths globally each year. Speaking at the United Nations' Climate Week in London, UN Secretary-General António Guterres linked the extreme weather to climate change. As heatwaves become more frequent and more intense, can Europe adapt quickly enough to extreme heat?
