This is also the day when Joshua stopped the moon in the sky. Joseph teaches us that no matter what we go through – everything is part of the path. And the Rebbe, in the same way, cried out to the generation: A Jew is not born to survive – he is born to bring redemption. There is a deep connection between the month of Tammuz and Parashah Hukat. Parashah Hukat teaches that not everything needs to be understood. A red cow is a “law” – a commandment that has no intellectual understanding. This is exactly what the month of Tammuz is about, when the experience of seeing begins. It is known in Kabbalah that each month corresponds to a different organ in a person. Tammuz and Av are directed against the eyes, and therefore the main work in them is the sanctity of the eyes. And this is also the connection to the righteous Joseph. The parsha of Hokat says: One does not always need to understand – the main thing is the will of God. And the righteous Joseph teaches: to maintain holiness even within Egypt. A Jew does not live only by what he understands, he lives by what he is connected to. There are things that the intellect understands, and there are things that the soul knows. Joseph is the correction of the spies: The spies arrived in the Land of Israel and said: It is impossible. Joseph arrived in Egypt – a much more difficult place – and said: It is possible. The spies fled from their assignment; Joseph saw a mission. The spies saw exile; Joseph saw preparation for redemption. So is the righteous man: he looks the other way. His vision is always positive, because he is positive within himself. The spies fell because they saw negation in everything. Joseph the righteous was one of the only ones called "righteous" – along with the righteous Benjamin and the righteous Shimon. Joseph's special virtue was his power of positive vision – seeing in every situation the will of God, the mission, and the path to redemption.
