Currently, Kaushambi district is divided into three tehsils (Surathu, Manjhanpur, and Chayal). Manjhanpur is its headquarters, located approximately 50 km from Allahabad. Kaushambi is bordered by Chitrakoot to the south, Pratapgarh to the north, Fatehpur to the west, and Allahabad to the east. The area encompassed by the present-day Kaushambi district has a very glorious history. The history of ancient Kaushambi dates back to the times of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Kaushambi, one of the 16 regions of the Mahabharata, was the capital of the ancient Vatsa Mahajanapada. Information about this place is also found in the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. According to the Puranas, King Nichakshu of Hastinapur, the seventh generation after Yudhishthira, established his capital in the city of Kaushambi in the Vatsa region after Hastinapur was washed away by the Ganges.
