Montana Restored 12,000 Acres Of Dead Wetlands — Then Beavers Changed Everything
For decades, more than 12,000 acres of wetlands in Montana were slowly dying. Streams that once flowed year-round had become dry channels, wildlife populations were disappearing, and vast areas of habitat seemed beyond recovery. Determined to reverse the damage, conservationists, landowners, and restoration experts launched an ambitious effort to bring water back to the landscape. They restored stream channels, rebuilt natural water systems, and revived native vegetation across thousands of acres. But the most remarkable part of the story came after the restoration work was already underway. As water returned, so did one of nature's greatest ecosystem engineers: the beaver. What happened next surprised even experienced scientists. The beavers began constructing dams throughout the restored wetlands, creating ponds, slowing water flow, raising groundwater levels, and transforming the region on a scale humans alone could never achieve. Within a few years, wetlands expanded, native plants flourished, fish populations increased, and countless birds and mammals returned to habitats that had been lost for generations.
