In the 19th century, Phenius Gage, a railway construction engineer, suffered a serious injury in an accident when an iron bar penetrated his head. He miraculously survived, but suffered severe damage to his orbitofrontal cortex. This caused a change in his personality, and he no longer showed regret for any of his actions. A study at the University of California, Berkeley, directly measured subjects' brain waves while they engaged in a gambling task. A significant increase in activity in this area was observed immediately after the outcome of their gambling was revealed. This activity reflected the magnitude of regret for the previous choice, and was primarily driven by the frustration of losing or regret for not having bet more. Normally, these brain signals lead to inhibition of future behavior. However, in gambling addiction, regret signals are weakened or affect decision-making in an overly distorted way, which is thought to prevent actual behavioral improvement and increase the risk of relapse. Furthermore, gambling addicts have a muted emotional response to losses compared to healthy individuals. Despite this, they are reportedly highly sensitive to anticipatory anxiety, such as "I might regret it if I don't lose next time." This imbalance in psychological and brain activity patterns is apparently manifested in the contradictory behavior of gambling again despite feelings of regret. ...However, the brain is overwhelmed by the overflow of dopamine, and has been remodeled into one in which regret is less important than excitement. If anything is "evil," it must be the smart people who created it.
