The pupil is the opening in the center of the iris (the structure that gives our eyes their color). The pupil's function is to allow light to enter the eye so it can be focused on the retina, allowing us to see. Gennady Yudenkov here, talking about vision on the Mister Vision channel. This is a video series on the anatomy of the eye, as well as related eye diseases. In this video, we'll look at the human pupil. Don't forget to hit the three buttons: like and subscribe to help promote the video, and the thank you button to ask a question, buy me a coffee, or something more. Pupils are typically perfectly round, equal in size, and black in color. The black color is due to the fact that light passing through the pupil is absorbed by the retina and is not reflected back (under normal lighting). Pupil Function Together, the iris and pupil determine the amount of light entering the eye. Using a camera analogy, the pupil is the aperture of the eye, and the iris is the diaphragm, which controls the size of the aperture. Pupil size can vary significantly among individuals. Why do pupils enlarge in humans, or why do pupils dilate? Some people have large pupils, while others have small ones. Pupil size also changes with age: children and young adults typically have dilated pupils, while older adults have narrow pupils. Generally, the normal pupil size in adults ranges from 2 to 4 millimeters (mm) in diameter in bright light, and up to 4-8 mm in darkness. Next, we'll learn why the pupil dilates when we're excited and why the pupil dilates when we see someone we like. Don't forget to read. Besides light exposure, both pupils typically constrict when focusing at close distances, such as when reading. This is called the accommodative pupillary response. Pupils typically respond directly and indirectly to light stimuli. The response of one pupil to direct illumination is called the direct pupillary response; the response of the other pupil is called the concordant pupillary response. Adie syndrome. This is a pupil that is almost unresponsive to light (direct or consensual) and has a delayed accommodative response. Argyll Robertson syndrome. This is a pupil that is unresponsive to light (direct or consensual), but the accommodative response is normal. Marcus Gunn syndrome is a pupillary afferent defect, indicating a decreased pupillary response to light in the affected eye. This is an abnormal result of the swinging flashlight test, where the patient's pupils constrict even less (therefore appearing to dilate) when light is directed from the unaffected eye to the affected eye. Trauma. Penetrating ocular trauma affecting the iris is a common cause of abnormal pupillary shape. Recent studies have confirmed that sexual arousal elicits a pupillary dilation response, and that this response may be useful in sexuality studies or for assessing sexual orientation. #HumanEyePupil #pupil #eyeanatomy Dear friends, I hope you enjoyed the video 😍 The best thank you from you is a cup of coffee, ☕🍰with cake, or a pack of aromatic coffee beans.
