Soft Rush - a Growing Problem
This video was made by Julian Wormald, one of CMG's founder members. It describes how he and his wife Fiona managed to transform an area on their smallholding from being dominated by soft rush (Juncus effusus) with little else able to thrive, to the species rich meadow/pasture it is now. It begins by showing the field as it was in 2013. As Julian points out in the commentary (delivered by subtitles, there isn't a voice-over) you would now need to gain the appropriate NPTC qualification to deliver localised herbicide treatment (they used MCPA and a knapsack sprayer). Following the de-rushing of the land, it's very interesting how its management, compared to that of neighbouring fields, has allowed it to remain more or less rush-free.
