We’re leaving Almaty and heading toward the remote border town of Kegen, in southeastern Kazakhstan. Along the way, we explore the breathtaking Charyn Canyon and meet some incredibly warm and welcoming locals. The next morning, before crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan, Yan receives a traditional Kazakh hat as a heartfelt gift from a local in Kegen’s market square. From there, we journey through the stunning mountain valleys, passing herders and their cattle descending from the high pastures, before finally arriving in Karakol.
