We show the authors' practical experience with sharpening chains for gasoline and electric chainsaws. After several unsuccessful sharpening attempts by local self-taught craftsmen ("Kulibins"), which resulted in severe damage to the saw chain, the authors decided to investigate the problem independently. They studied numerous videos and articles, concluding that reliable information must be meticulously extracted from a large volume of contradictory sources. The paper explains the basic structure of a saw chain, including link types, rivet counting for pitch measurement, and the importance of matching the chain's pitch (measured at approximately 9.5 mm or 3/8 inch), drive link gauge (approx. 1.5 mm), and length (35 cm / 14 inches) with the guide bar specifications. After successfully identifying the correct parameters — 14-inch bar, 3/8" pitch, 1.3 mm gauge, 52 drive links — a new chain was purchased and tested without issues. The authors then critique common amateur sharpening practices, particularly using abrasive grinding wheels without cooling (which overheats and damages the hardened steel). They argue that factory geometry is the result of extensive engineering and should be respected.
