If Jesus instituted the sacrament of confession right after his resurrection, what would that tell us about the level of importance this holds for Jesus? At the end of the Gospel of John, Jesus appears to the apostles -- who had just abandoned him -- after his resurrection and gives them the authority to forgive AND retain sins. What would this have meant? What was Jesus doing? And what authority is this that is being given to the apostles, as the gospels say elsewhere that forgiving others' sins is a power that only God can perform?
