KSADP Rice value chain success stories Episode 1

HOW SASAKAWA AFRICA ASSOCIATION IS TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF SMALLHOLDER FARMERS IN NIGERIA – the story of Mr Aminu Alhassan Kyambo Mr Aminu Alhassan Kyambo is a native of Dawakin Kudu community and living with Albinism (PLA) in Kano state, Nigeria. Aminu got a rice milling machine, a de-stoner, and a rice polisher from the SAA in 2021 through the Kano Agropastoral Development Project, KSADP, funded by the Islamic Development Bank and Lives and livelihood funds. With training in Agric enterprise management, good agricultural practices, GAPs, and extensive training on post-harvest handling from Sasakawa Africa Association, Mr Aminu has properly repositioned himself along the Rice production value chain by employing 4 young Machine operators and 3 Women in his community who now handle rice parboiling at his rice milling centre. During an assessment visit to his rice processing centre located along Dawaki-Makole road in Dawakin Kudu town, Mr Aminu took the SAA team on a tour of his unfolding expansion plan. He says he now buys between 20-40 tons of rice from local farmers monthly to process, brand, and resell. He says that after one year of consistency in the Rice processing business, he decided to expand his Rice Milling enterprise. He says he has created employment for 15 natives, mainly women and youths, in Dawakin kudu and also opened up access to markets for local farmers in his community with support from Sasakawa through the KSADP. This number, he says, will increase exponentially when he expands the business.
