The number of abandoned newborn babies continues to grow. In 2024, a 28-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of abandoning the body of a newborn baby in a golf course restroom. To prevent such tragic incidents, the establishment of "baby hatches" where parents with special circumstances can anonymously leave their children in their care is gaining attention. Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, has announced its goal of becoming the first city in Japan to establish a "government-led" baby hatch system.
