Patrick McGilligan on Sydney Pollack: Collected Interviews | The Director Behind the Legend

My guest today is Patrick McGilligan, a film biographer and historian. His many works include the New York Times Notable Books George Cukor: A Double Life and Fritz Lang: The Nature of the Beast, the Edgar Award finalist Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light, and the life stories of Jack Nicholson, Clint Eastwood, Robert Altman, Oscar Micheaux, Mel Brooks, and Woody Allen.  Patrick is also editor of the University Press of Kentucky’s Screen Classics—a series of critical biographies, film histories, and analytical studies focusing on neglected filmmakers and important screen artists and subjects, from the era of silent cinema to the golden age of Hollywood to the international generation of today. He is here today to discuss this newest book, of collected interviews of Sydney Pollack. Patrick and his co-editor Paul Cronin put this amazing read together. I want to thank Patrick McGilligan for sharing his insights into Sydney Pollack: Collected Interviews, a book that I found not only fascinating but deeply inspiring. For filmmakers, directors, actors, and anyone who loves the craft of cinema, this collection offers a rare opportunity to sit in the room with one of Hollywood's most thoughtful storytellers. What struck me most throughout these interviews is Pollack's unwavering commitment to truth. He understood that great filmmaking isn't about spectacle alone—it's about humanity. And perhaps one of the most valuable lessons found within these pages is his belief that acting is not simply performing. It's discovering the essence of a character. Sometimes that means speaking volumes with silence, trusting stillness, and allowing authenticity to take center stage. This book reminds us that great cinema is built on observation, patience, and an understanding of human behavior. Whether you're an emerging filmmaker or a seasoned professional, there is wisdom here that can reshape how you approach storytelling. I wholeheartedly encourage filmmakers everywhere to read Sydney Pollack: Collected Interviews. You may come away with a deeper appreciation for Pollack's legacy, but more importantly, you may discover new inspiration for your own creative journey. #sydneypollack #tomcruise #stanleykubrick #eyeswideshut #thefirm #tootsie #jeremiahjohnson #robertredford #barbrastreisand #thewaywewere #filmmaker #filmdirector #actor #screenwriter
