Nalanda was established by emperor Kumaragupta I of the Gupta Empire around 427 CE. Nalanda played a vital role in promoting the patronage of arts and academics during the 5th and 6th century CE, a period that has since been described as the "Golden Age of India" by scholars. Nalanda was attacked by Huns in the 5th century and again sustained severe damages from an invasion of the Gauda king of Bengal in the 8th Century and at final invasion it was burnt by Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji (c. 1200). The ancient site of Nalanda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site taken care by the ASI (Archeological Survey of India). Pawapuri is Mahavira's nirvana and a pilgrimage site for Jains. It is believed that Lord Mahavira attained Mahanirvana on the night of Diwali on Kartik Amavasya, on the occasion of which Nirvana Mahotsav is organised every year in Pawapuri on the day of Kartik Amavasya on the night of Diwali. This two-day event is organised by the Nalanda district administration and the Art, Culture, and Youth Department of the Government of Bihar.
