PET scan is almost the same as other scans like CT scan or MRI scan. PET scan is done to understand how much cancer has spread in the body. Before a PET scan, a glucose compound is injected into the body because cancer cells tend to absorb more glucose than normal cells so it gets accumulated in cancer-affected areas. Patients might not get a PET scan without an appointment. Doctors instruct what to do before a PET scan. Diabetes patients have to have their sugar in control because the drug which is going to be used is glucose-based. All this process might take half a day of the patient. PET scan cannot tell “Exactly” where and how much cancer has spread. But when a CT scan is added, more detailed information can be achieved. For that reason, PET CT is done in most hospitals. The machine used in the PET scan doesn’t make sounds like an MRI machine. There is a minimum size criterion for a PET scan to detect cancer which is 5mm. PET scan Cannot tell that the bright areas showing in the result are showing because of infection, tumour, or trauma. In all these conditions there is more cell activity of a cell. If there is a possibility the doctor might suggest a biopsy. If the disease is present in the brain, a PET scan cannot find the disease because in the brain Normally glucose activity is more than other body parts.
