It is grotesque to see him appealing earnestly to someone he cannot even see." This is because a sermon is not a written form, but a living, spoken word shared face-to-face. I believe that a truly effective sermon is one in which the preacher conveys his message with his entire being—his voice, his eyes, his facial expressions, his gestures—if possible. I hope this will be of some help to those who are new to preaching and to those who dream of freeing themselves from manuscript sermons. (The video is part of my online homiletics course, "How to Preach Without a Manuscript, Like TED"). _ Dr. Dong-Sik Son (Ph.D. in Homiletics, London Theological Seminary, UK, specializing in Spurgeon, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and John Stott) After graduating from the Department of Theology at Seoul Theological Seminary, he earned a Th.M. in New Testament Studies from Yonsei University Graduate School, and a Ph.D. from London School of Theology, a leading evangelical theological school in the UK, with a focus on the preaching of Spurgeon, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and John Stott. He served as an Air Force chaplain, a chaplain at Myongji University, and senior pastor of Hajeo Church. He has contributed over 200 homiletics-related articles to publications such as Duranno's [Pastoral Ministry and Theology], [The Word], and Bible Union's [Meditation and Sermon]. His published works include [The Prince of Preaching, Spurgeon's Sermon Stories] (Duranno) and [Preaching Handbook] (co-authored).
