Sophie Learns Through Play - Letter ( ABC ) Buntings

This letter identification activity is a very interactive and fun way in teaching toddlers familiarize the alphabet and phonics and helping them develop and improve their fine and gross motor skills at the same time. From preparation to the activity itself and down to cleaning up, our lovely little lady, Sophie Brielle, was full of energy and enthusiasm. (materials: foam letters, yarn, masking tape, and garment rack) We had this activity when Sophie was 21 months old (November 18, 2019). The goal of this activity is to identify and remove the correct letter attached to the yarn and tape and give it to me. I used these foam letters since they are colorful (toddlers are really attracted to colors) and I decided to group the letters instead of using another garment rack to tie all the letters because she might be more distracted with more letters and colors. In addition, I decided not to ask her all the letters in sequence (alphabetical order) to know if she really knows each letter as written and as its sound. And she really does. Good thing also, its corresponding colors (since she knows primary and secondary colors) helped us identify those letters with sounds that seem confusing and similar for her. You may find this video a little ahead of what and how we should teach them the alphabet since this is more on identifying the letter and letter sound than introducing them. So, here's a background of how we introduced her to the world of letters (alphabet) and phonics. Back when she was three months until a year old, we usually read her books about the alphabet (My First Book of Alphabet, as an example). We let her listen and do her own sounds while we read. When she reached one year to 15 months, we randomly asked her to identify different letters. Sometimes she got them right, sometimes she did not. And it was totally fine and smooth. Nothing to rush at all. Then, when she reached 16 months, we came across a company that offers comprehensive learning kits with an interesting approach in teaching the alphabet, it is called Jolly Phonics (Extra). We've been learning a lot since we started using the materials and letters and phonics became an interesting and interactive learning time with her. The day when I recorded this activity video was our first alphabet and phonics activity. Since she is an active toddler who likes to run, jump, and walk around the house and she also likes playing with tapes, I decided to try this activity with her. And to my surprise, this sort of trial activity turned out to be very interactive, fun and effective and I must say that she was really able to familiarize the letters/alphabet that we taught her. Great job, our Sophie Brielle. Toddlers are really good at observing and absorbing the things that we show and teach them. Their formative years are very important in teaching them different things especially when we let them learn these through playing and engaging in fun activities. #letter #alphabet #ABC #phonics #Sophie #SophieBrielle #toddler #toddlers #learn #learns #play #playing #buntings #SophieLearnsThroughPlay-Letter(ABC)Buntings #learningthealphabet #learnABC #preschool #learningthroughplay #playandlearn #finemotorskills #grossmotorskills #educational #funinlearning #toddlervideos #toddleractivitiesathome #playtime #playathome #playbasedlearning #toddlerplay #toddleractivities #playtolearn #videosfortoddlers #videosforkids #distancelearning #homeschool music used in the video is from @iksonmusic
