RUTA AL IBÓN DE ESTANÉS POR EL VALLE DE AGUAS TUERTAS Y MONASTERIO SAN JUAN DE LA PEÑA david biacha

Weekend in the Pyrenees where we will be hiking to the Ibón de Estanés through the Aguas Tuertas valley. "Ibón" is an Aragonese word to refer to a glaciar lake. Close to this route, and since we are based in Jaca, we will also do canyoning in the d'os Lucas canyon. Finally, we will visit the monastery of san Juan de la Peña - even if the original plan was to do the route to the Ibón de Acherito, but that will remain in our back pocket until the next time we come. So far I can only recommend it. The route we will follow to the Ibón de Estanés via Aguas Tuertas - a classic Pyrenees hike - starts form the Guarrinza valley parking. From there we will start walking following the Aragón-Subordán river, to whom we will travel with until we go up to the Aguas Tuertas valley, where the river is born. The green there is so intense that it is easy to understand it is used for cattle breeding. This way, walking through cows and horses (and even some vultures), we will go until the other side of the valley. At 8 kilometers from our starting point we will get to see for the first time the ibón de Estanés, limit between Aragón - where it is located - and France. Walking around it we will approach to its shore, all of this while enjoying some views under the Secús cúpula (cupola), which measures over 2400 meters high. It is a route that totals 23 kilometers the way round as well as 800 meters of incline. Spending the night over in Jaca, and tired from the previous day, we will go for a more quiet plan - but still as shocking as the previous one. We will visit the Royal Monastery of san Juan de la Peña (Sant Chuan d'a Penya in Aragonese language), which was the most important monastery of the Aragón kingdom during the Early Middle Ages and where some kings from the period are buried in the Royal Pantheon the monastery hosts. However, the most spectacular things to get seen here are two: on the one hand the monastery's cloisters, whose columns are decorated with motives from the late 11th century. On the other hand the building as such, completely embedded under and in the rock of the mountain that stands on top of it. The afternoon the day we got there, and before getting to do anything else, we did the affordable but defintely not trivial d'os Lucas canyon which will delight us with amazing dive jumps 10 and 8 meters high as well as with an amazing segment of rappel of almost 30 meters very close to the end. For newbies as we are, a perfect way to immediately get in the mood for such a weekend as this a few hours after getting in the car from the city. All in all, in a weekend - which has turned into a yearly tradition for us - where we have adventure, hiking and culture.
