Is Hudson Valley Ready for Climate Migration? | Rolling Thru PBS
What happens when climate change starts to reshape where — and how — we live? In Episode 7 of Rolling Thru, Pat Kelly rides from Albany into the Hudson Valley to explore how New Yorkers are responding to food insecurity, wildfire risk, and climate migration. Albany’s Free Food Fridge fights food insecurity The ride continues in Albany, where Free Food Fridge shows how mutual aid can help address food insecurity with no barriers and no questions asked. What New York’s ice age past tells us about its climate future At the New York State Museum, the story of New York’s natural history offers a bigger-picture look at how environments have changed over time — and what that can tell us about the future. Biking from Albany into Hudson Valley As Pat rides south into Hudson Valley, the landscape shifts from city streets to rural roads and forested hills — where climate risks are less visible, but no less real. Why Wildfire Risk Is Growing in the Northeast Along the way, Pat visits the Museum of Firefighting to look at how fire departments are preparing for longer wildfire seasons and new climate-driven threats in places not usually associated with major fires. Is the Hudson Valley Becoming a Climate Migration Destination? Journalist PJ Cronin also explains how climate migration is already affecting the Hudson Valley, as people look for stability, affordability, and resilience in a changing world. Hudson, New York and the Future of Climate Resilience This ride ends in Hudson, where small cities are beginning to feel both the impacts and opportunities of a changing climate. This episode continues a bicycle journey across New York State, exploring how communities adapt when the pressures of climate change become impossible to ignore.
