Positivism, positivist thought, or positivist science is a sociological, philosophical, and political doctrine that emerged in the 19th century and is strongly influenced by Enlightenment ideals. In this post you will learn about the main characteristics of Positivism, and also about the celebrated thinker Auguste Comte, the father of positivism and one of the precursors of sociological thought. Let's go? Who was Auguste Comte? Auguste Comte (1789-1957), born in Montpellier, France, was the first author to systematize Sociology as a specific science. His thought was characterized by the attempt to order human knowledge through a fundamentally descriptive approach based on quantitative elements, contrasting with the metaphysical and theological explanations that dominated the philosophical and social theories of the time. Comte rejected theories based on speculation and universal abstractions, as he believed only in the observation of phenomena through sensory experience. The positivist theory created by Comte defended that sensory experience would be the only one to produce concrete (positive) data because it stems from the observation of the physical or material world. The positivist methodology is the observation of phenomena itself. Auguste Comte's Positivism: By completely disregarding all knowledge that cannot be scientifically proven through experience, Positivism has as its principles: the real, the certain, the useful, the relative, the precise, and the organic. For positivists, there is no objectivity in the knowledge obtained through metaphysics or theology, since these do not construct their theories from scientifically observable phenomena. This attachment to observable phenomena – although it seems somewhat radical today, since it discards all forms of thought not based on empirical facts – was fundamental to the emergence of the social sciences. Unlike philosophy, the social sciences emerge as an area of knowledge capable of thinking about society in scientific terms and, therefore, in practical and objective terms. However, Auguste Comte uses the principles of the natural sciences to analyze social phenomena, and this led him to some errors. Social physics, created by Comte, which would later become Sociology, was initially constructed as a quantitative science, in which research data would be capable of building precise theories about society. For this, the analysis of the data had to be objective. Positivism preached "love as a principle, order as a basis, and progress as an end." The motto of the Brazilian flag – order and progress – is inspired by positivist ideals. For positivists, the progress of humanity depends exclusively on scientific advances. ⏱ TIMESTAMPS / TOPICS 00:30 Who was Auguste Comte? 03:10 The emergence of Sociology 07:35 Tasks of Sociology for Auguste Comte 09:00 What is Positivism? 🔴 ALSO WATCH HOW DID SOCIOLOGY EMERGE?    • COMO SURGIU A SOCIOLOGIA? Contexto históri...   LABOR THEORY FOR MARX, WEBER AND DURKHEIM    • TEORIA DO TRABALHO: DURKHEIM, MARX E WEBER...   ❤️ SOCIAL MEDIA INSTA @cursoenemgratuito TWITTER @enemgratuito FACE /cursoenemgratuito/ /// SO, WHAT IS THE FREE ENEM COURSE?
